Sangria, a refreshing drink with traditional roots in Spain, stands out for its composition based on red wine, chopped fruits and a touch of sweetness with sugar. This mixture is often enriched with liqueurs and other ingredients, resulting in a range of flavors. Its popularity especially flourishes in the warm months, taking advantage of its cold serving and making it the ideal choice for outdoor events, picnics and festivities.
In Colombia, over the last three years, this drink has experienced impressive growth in terms of recognition. Its presence has become so ingrained that it is available in virtually every restaurant, often as a welcome option. Furthermore, its marketing covers both the artisanal and industrial fields, even reaching formats such as canned Sangria.
What is the recipe for sangria?
A basic sangria usually includes the following ingredients:
Red Wine or Lambrusco: It is usually the base of sangria. Good quality red wine is used, but it does not necessarily have to be the most expensive wine. If you want a more foamy drink, use lambrusco as a base.
Fruits: Fruits are an essential element of sangria. Fresh fruits such as oranges, lemons, apples, grapes, peaches or any other seasonal fruit are used.
Sweetener: Sugar, agave syrup or lychee or apple syrup are added.
Liqueur: Although optional, a liqueur such as brandy or orange liqueur (triplesec) is often added for a touch of flavor and depth.
Flavored Sodas: To dilute and carbonate the drink, soda or lemon, orange or lemon-lime soda is added. (not recommended if you have lambrusco as a base).
Preparation of Sangria
Preparing sangria is quite simple: cut the fruits into slices or small pieces and mix them with the wine, sweetener and liqueur in a large jug. Then it is left to rest in the refrigerator for several hours so that the flavors mix and the fruits contribute their sweetness and aroma to the liquid. Just before serving, flavored soda is added to give it an effervescent touch.
It is worth mentioning that there are many variations of sangria, including versions that use white or rosé wine instead of red, and others that incorporate ingredients such as cinnamon, fresh herbs or even more exotic fruits. Sangria is a versatile and adaptable drink that can be customized to each person's tastes and preferences.
