What is Aperol?

Aperol is an Italian liqueur with an intense orange color and bitter-orange flavor. It is made with a secret blend of herbs and roots, including gentian, rhubarb and bitter orange. It has an alcohol content of 11%, which makes it a softer drink than other bitter liqueurs such as Campari.

Origin of Aperol:

Aperol was created in 1919 in Padua, Italy, by the Barbieri brothers. Originally, it was called "Aperitivo Barbieri" and was intended as a light, easy-to-drink aperitif. Over time, its popularity grew, and in the 1920s, it adopted the name Aperol.

Flavor and Characteristics of Aperol:

Aperol has a sweet and sour flavor with notes of orange, herbs and spices. Its alcohol content is lower than other liquors, generally around 11% to 13%.

How to take Aperol:

Aperol is commonly consumed in light, refreshing cocktails. The most famous of all is the "Aperol Spritz", which is a mixture of Aperol, sparkling wine (such as Prosecco) and soda, usually served over ice and garnished with a slice of orange.

How Aperol is combined:

Aperol is versatile and can be combined with various drinks to create unique cocktails. In addition to Spritz, it can be mixed with other liqueurs or fruit juices for interesting flavors. It is also common to combine Aperol with sparkling water or tonic.

Other ways to enjoy it:

  • Negroni sbagliato: Aperol, Campari, prosecco
  • American: Aperol, Campari, sparkling mineral water
  • Bellini: Aperol, peach puree, prosecco
  • Veneziano Spritz: Aperol, Select, prosecco
